Audience Feedback and Ancillary Billboard Draft Two

Below is my second draft for my billboard. I decided that it needed a title on it and the e4 logo for brand identity and reach. The last draft I did, had no title on or logo so it has improved considerably.

Under the title on the billboard, I have wrote words such as 'gossip, drame and friendship.' These words also appear at the end of my trailer,so tye two link together. Personally I prefer this design to the other as it has the soap name on and e4 logo meaning the viewers can determine the soap easier than the previous one and relate more to it.

Ancillary Billboard - First Draft

Below is my first draft for my ancillary billboard.

All of the stars are looking at Tarquin (bottom middle) to show that the focus is on him.
I took inspiration for this poster from the Towie billboards that are sometimes seen.

Improvements to be made:
  • Top Left - Rose's hair could be edited so it is not as yellow
  • Bottom Right - Image could be changed as she is not looking at the star correctly and doesn't look annoyed that her boyfriend is cheating on her with 2 other girls

The colour's behind the stars do not match their mood in the soap. This is for the reason that on the Towie billboard, there are only 4 different colours, all of which do not connote their mood or role. Therefore, I felt that as I was replicating this in my own way, my colours did not need to match the stars mood. Another reason why this wasn't done was due to Tarquin wearing red, and because he is seen as the 'love-rat' or 'devil' in the soap, red would be a suitable coloured background but it would clash to much with his clothing.

Rejected photos from Ancillary Billboard

I rejected the photo below because the stars facial expression is not serious and therefore unsuitable for use.

I rejected the photo below because of the stars clothing and his facial expression. His clothing is too casual to be shown on a billboard for a posh soap, also the green jacket blends in with the background so it would be hard to edit. His facial expression is wrong aswell, as he needs to look annoyed at the fact his girlfriend has been stolen from him. The lighting is also to harsh making the star look washed out.

The shot below was rejected because the lighting is to harsh on the actresses face. As it is artificial light, it is very harsh and washes out her tone, therefore blending her hair and skin together.

The shot below was rejected because the star is glaring too much which makes her eye look half closed. Also her facial expression is wrong because she doesn't need to be looking that angry at Tarquin, because she still loves him at the end of the day.

The shot below was rejected because the stars face is covered by her hair and the lighting is very harsh. As she is natural fair, her skin, hair and top all blend into one because of the usage of artificial lighting.

The shot below was rejected because of the wrong facial expression from the star. She is smiling slightly which connotes she is happy that her boyfriend is seeing other people, when she should really be looking annoyed and concerned.

Images used on Ancillary Poster/Billboard

Below, on this page are the images that I have edited to be used on my poster.

I created these images by opening the original images (below) on Photoshop and selecting the magic wand tool and deleting out the background so we were just left with the star. I then added in another layer behind the image and filled it with a colour of my choice. I decied to stick to bright colours, much like my inspiration and also so it would stand out.

The stars are all looking in different directions as, when pieced together they will all be looking at Tarquin, the main character in the trailer and who the soap revolves around.

Ancillary Billboard Planning/deconstruction

As before I looked at planning for my billboard, I decided to copy the style of The Only Way is Essex. (below)

Below are several layouts that I could follow when I create this for my soap.

The stars names are shown in order of Made in Chelsea character name, The Mancunian Way character name and the name of actor/actress in my group.

As I am not sure which would look most suited and realistic, I will create both in order to create the best I can.

Ancillary Billboard Planning

Before I could plan a photoshoot for my Billboard, I needed to research existing scripted reality advertisements and billboards.
As our group have followed conventions of Made In Chelsea, I felt it was necessary to carry on with this and follow the conventions of Made in Chelsea's advertisements.

Below are some images of their billboard posters.

After looked at existing Made in Chelsea billboards, personally I think they are too extravagant. Even though they do very much connotate the wealth like in Made in Chelsea, but as our is more down - graded as it is based in Manchester, I decided to research other Scripted reality shows like Towie for their billboards and advertisements.

Below is an example of the Towie billboard.

I think this would be much more eye catching than the Made in Chelsea's version. As it is bright, simple, and contains just as many characters as the MIC billboard, but in a more eye catching and easy to read format.

As The Mancunian Way is a more lower class version of Made In Chelsea, I strongly felt that this layout and conventions was more suitable for my soap.

GarageBand

GarageBand is a programme typically invented for the apple computers. It is where your computer turns into a selection of instruments and you can edit the tempo, beats and genre according to how you want it to sound. I felt it wasn't necessary for me to use GarageBand as I had already put music on my trailer that suited the genre, audience and theme very well. I understand how GarageBand works but felt is was necessary for me to continue using iMovie to fit my music and trailer.

Final Trailer with Keynote title card

Below is my final edit of my trailer. I added in the title card which I created on Keynote and took away the previous title card which was created on iMovie.
I choose to use the song which plays from the begining on the trailer as I felt that it ties the whole trailer together alot more and makes much more sence.

Using Keynote and iMovie to create a title card

Below are several screenshots which show how I used Keynote to create a title card  over a shot in my trailer. Keynote is a programme which enabled me to be ale to create a sticker like the e4 logo to appear on screen whilst my trailer is still playing. The title cards used on iMovie did not let me do this and I was only able to create a slide in iMovie saying 'The Mancunian Way' therefore keynote was the perfect programme for me to use.

Firstly I took screenshots of the e4 logo and sticker and pasted them into keynote on the video where I wanted my title to appear.
I then added in transititions and delayed it so it would appear at the right time in my trailer.

Before I created a real version for my offical trailer, I did a practise run to check that I could use it correctly and that it looked proffesional (below)

As the practise run went smootly and looked proffesional, I created my own for use in my trailer (below)

This clip could then be edited into my trailer.

Audience Feedback and Trailer Draft 4

Below are two versions of my new trailer, both are identical except for the song in the background. I have made two versions, so that I can gain feedback from others as to which music suits the trailer more.

The changes I have made from the previous draft are the songs choices and the title cards at the end of the trailer. The title cards are now black and more sophiscated than previously. They also appear faster and look more realistic.

The trailer below uses the song in the style of Made in Chelsea, where there is an opening scene and the music kicks in when the drama happens.

The trailer above uses the song Midnight City by M83 (Below.) It is ocassional used on Made in Chelsea trailers as you can see two videos down.

The trailer below uses another typical Made in Chelsea song but in a different style. The music is played all through the trailer but picks up tempo when the drama happens. With this style, the trailer all ties in together alot more as the music is continuous and therfore sticks together easier.

This video uses the song All that I can give by Production Team. This is also another sterotypically used song in Made in Chelsea. When someone hears this song they instantly relate back to Made in Chelsea.

Audience Feedback and Trailer Draft 3

Feedback I received on my second draft of my trailer suggested that I should re-shoot some shots in order for it to look professional  Re-Filming most of my trailer has made it look much more realistic and it all fits together a lot better as the shots contain less background noise and are clear and precise.

From my previous trailer, on my own accord I have changed the storyline around so it makes more sense to the viewer, changed the music and added in another voice over. The music was changed so that it is very similar to Made in Chelsea. At the start of every episode, they show what happened previously and they use this music every week for brand identity. Every time you hear the song now, it immediately makes the consumer think of Made in Chelsea, or in my case The Mancunian Way.
A lot of people in my group have, however used the same song and for this reason I am looking at changing it so that my trailer stands out from the rest.

I still feel that my trailer needs more work, such as the title cards at the end could be sped up and also I could add something in at the end(like a title card) saying The Mancunian Way.

Title cards

After looking at existing scripted reality trailers, it was clear that a lot contained title cards explaining what is happening. I felt that my trailer was fairly self explanatory and didn't need title cards to explain what is going on.
The only title cards that I wished to include in my trailer were quick an simple ones at the end of my trailer with key words on. These key words would simple state what is excpected to come in the series of my soap.

The title cards were done on iMovie as I felt they only needed to be basic as they were not a main part of my trailer.

Below is a series of screenshots that show a few of my title cards.

Audience Feedback and Re-shooting

Looking at my first draft of my trailer, a lot of the feedback received from my peers suggested that I should re - shoot some of my shots.
I agreed fully with this, as in order to make my trailer look professional, the shots needed to be steady and have very little non-diegetic sound in the background.

Below is a storyboard of the shots that need to be re-shot, due to one reason or another.

Auidence Feedback and Trailer Draft Two

More feedback I received on my first draft suggested that I needed to add music into my trailer, add more title cards and change the voice over as it said Made in Chelsea.
The feedback I received was very positive and the changes I was due to make were simple but also very effective.

Below is my second draft for the trailer for The Mancuian Way.

The main changes I have made are:

  • Changed the beginning title card to e4, for brand identity.
  • Added music to my trailer to make it look much more effective
  • Added more title cards to the end of the trailer
  • Taken away the voice over
  • Changed the storyline slightly
I still need to re-film some shots and add another voice over towards the end of the trailer.

Choosing our soap name

The name 'The Mancuinan Way' wasn't a easy name to come up, it took a while before the final name was chosen.

As we were creating a parody of Made in Chelsea, the initial name we choose was Made in Manchester. This was a simple choose to make as our soap was being filmed in Manchester and not Chelsea. It wasn't long into filming that our group divided and the choose of soap name turned into a more difficult position. Had of our group liked Made in Manchester, but the other half decided it was too stereotypical and breaching the copy write laws.

For this reason we had to come up with a new name for our soap. Mancuinan was chosen by us talking about accents one day as the Manchester accent is referred to as Mancunian, from this reason we though that could work well. But our soap couldn't just be called Mancunian as it didn't make sense or have a ring to it, it was then that The Mancunian Way was chosen.

The Mancunian Way Trailer - Draft 1

Below is a video of my trailer for The Mancunian way. It is only a first draft as I plan to edit and improve on my work from feedback from my peers.

When it came to editing my trailer, I found the storyline gave to much away and that is the opposite of what a trailer should do as it needs to 'entice' and make the audience want to tune in and watch the show to find out what happens.
For this reason, I edited the order of my storyline by deleting clips and changing the shot order. This not only made my trailer more realistic but it made it unique from the others in my group.

Positives of my trailer -
  • Storyline has improved from planned
  • Trailer is short and keeps the audience engaged

Negatives of my trailer -
  • There are no transitions - fade to black, pan in etc.
  • No music over the trailer - beats need to match action and relate
  • Storyline is still unclear
  • Need a voice over at the beginning - 'This week on The Mancunian Way'
  • Some shot are unsteady
  • Edits need to be sharper and quicker
  • Need to be sponsored by...

E4 branding and creating their style

As I chose e4 for my institution me channel to broadcast my soap it was important that I understood their conventions and worked in their style.

E4 have created a website and PDF file that can be found at this address: www.channel4.com/about_c4/styleguide
This highlights all of the guidelines to follow to achieve the perfect look.

Logo:
Should always be purple and white,
Min. Height 8mm,
Should be positioned in the bottom right hand corner, no closer than 10mm from the edge,
Use font American typewriter,

Researching channels

Below is a brainstorm of the institutions and channels that my soap could potentially be broadcasted from. I looked at bbc, itv and e4.

After looking at this, our soap looks like it would most be suited for e4 as they have a similar target audience and subject/genre.

E4 is mostly for teens and younger adults.
ITV is mainly for women and stereotypical housewives.
BBC is mainly for the older audience and a traditional soap opera rather then scripted reality.

Rejected Clips for Final Trailer

On the title card for the video, I have realised there is a typo error and it is meant to say 'Rejected shot's' and not just shot.

Shot 1:

  • I rejected this clip as the camera is very blurry and shaky  The clip was very long as I forgot to switch of the camera which meant that there is a steady version of the shot later on in the clip.
Shot 2:
  • In this clip there is too much background noise meaning the actors cannot be heard. Also at the end of the shot, one of the actresses looks at the camera meaning it couldn't be used.
Shot 3:
  • On this clip there is too much background noise meaning the actress cannot be heard. The lighting in the shot is also very harsh and doesn't match the mood of the shot. Not only is the shot very bright and very noisy but the actress says her line wrong meaning it had to be immediately ruled out from our final trailer.
Shot 4:
  • This clip had to be ruled out from our trailer as the clip was not filmed correctly and the actors lines are missing.
Shot 5:
  • The camera is very shaky on this clip making it look unprofessional and ruling it out from our trailer. The use of diegetic sound in this shot is inappropriate as it would be muted anyway.
Shot 6:
  • On this clip, it was supposed to be of an iconic part of Manchester  The shot zooms in to quickly meaning the camera doesn't have time to adjust and focus.
Shot 7:
  • This shot was filmed to low from what our planning suggested. Not only was this a problem but the actresses facial expression was wrong from what was expected of the shot.
Shot 8:
  • This clip is impossible to use due to very loud sirens and background noise.
Shot 9:
  • This clip looks very unprofessional as the camera is very unsteady, also the actors line is read wrong making it unable to be used.
Shot 10:
  • In the clip, towards the end, a passer-by gets into the shot making it look unrealistic. Due to this, the actor acts professionally and forgets the role he is supposed to be playing.
Shot 11:

  • The clip started to soon when the actor was trying to remember his lines, this makes the shot unsuitable due to the diegetic sound.

Planning: Script

After researching existing scripted reality trailers, in our group we decided to follow the stereotypes and connotations of 'Made in Chelsea.'

In our group, we all viewed existing trailers for Made in Chelsea and wrote down some of the main storylines.

I started my script by selecting the best storylines and looking at what would work together and also what we could film easily in Manchester.

Points I had to consider whilst drafting my script were:

  • Dialogue needs to be minimal and straight to the point
  • Not to many characters involved so the storyline and audience don't get confused
  • Only included relevant clips
  • Have a feeling that you want the viewer to have once they have watched it
  • Don't make it to long by dragging out the story - its only a trailer.

Soap name: The Mancunian Way.

Characters:
  • Me - Sapphire
  • Katie -
  • Georgia - Penelope
  • Max -
  • Ste - Tarquin
These character names match those of Made in Chelsea's. They are posh, unique and 'on trend' much like the original Made in Chelsea.
As our soap name is called 'The Mancunian Way' the character names needed to be slightly more 'lower class' in order to relate to the Manchester lifestyle. Manchester is considered lower class, trashy and 'wag central' compared to the lifestyles in Chelsea, so in order to fit the stereotypes associated with Manchester, the names chosen are relatively 'trashy.'

Below is a copy of the script we followed when filming our shots, and the plan i will follow when editing my trailer.

Planning: Target Audience

Below I have created a target audience mood board. This is so that my trailer will match the connotations of Made in Chelsea and the audiences will be the same. For my trailer, a certain class of people will be shown and portrayed meaning my target audience will need to fit in and like the same things for the soap to be successful.
The images on my moodboard consist of things that my target audience could relate to such as: general habits, clothing brands, hobbies and day to day objects they might use or come across.

From this moodboard I can also see what the audience likes to see and can cater for their changing needs.
